The advanced MicroFlux Trans (MFT) additive technology

Microflux Trans (TRANS=TRiple Action Non-sacrificial Surface engineering) : The tribo polymers formed by MFT are long-chained compounds with excellent lubricity and adhesion, increasing the load carrying area is improved. This unique physio-chemical reaction achieves a non-sacrificial micro-smoothing of the friction surfaces.

The advanced TGOA Additive technology

TGOA (Tribol Grease and Oil Additive) is the load-active additive combination. The advanced TGOA Additive technology, in relatively high specific loads and related temperatures, it promotes a non-destructive smoothing of surface roughness in the micro-range. This smoothing effect reduces friction and leads to an increase of the actual load-bearing surface. If surface roughness peaks redevelop because of shock loads or stop-and-go operation, the TGOA additive package automatically reactivates. Surface roughness is again smoothed and lubrication optimized.

PD Technology (Plastic Deformation)

High-performance lubricants with plastic deformation characteristics significantly boost productivity and profitability.

The three-stage process is also referred to as ‘Surface Engineering’ (SE) or ‘Plastic Deformation’ (PD) and was confirmed in various research projects by the FVA (Forschungsvereinigung Antriebstechnik – the German Power Transmission Engineering Research Association).

Surface Topography

A new ground or lapped metal surface is far from perfect when viewed under an electron microscope. It appears like a mountains landscape with peaks and valleys, as shown in the photograph. The rough surface of a workpiece is clearly visible and is obtained by scanning the surface with extremely precise diamond sensors or a laser beam and then displaying the profile in a highly magnified form. This demonstrates that the roughness that is, the difference between the highest ‘peak’ and the lowest ‘valley’ can reach almost 2 µm.

Friction and wear always occur when two surfaces slide against each other since extremely high pressures are concentrated on the relatively small area occupied by these peaks.

Stage 1 : Formation of the protective layer

On the surfaces of a system lubricated with high-performance lubricants with PD characteristics, a pressure-resistant additive combination is immediately formed. This leads to the formation of a protective layer with a high lubricating effect.

Stage 2 : Compression of the protective layer

With increasing load, this protective layer is compressed, becomes even more pressure-resistant and at the same time improves the coefficient of friction.

Stage 3 : Micro-smoothing

The final stage signifies the actual unique performance of these lubricants. As the pressure increases further, special additive components migrate from the deposited protective layer into the structure of the metal surfaces, thus initiating the micro-smoothing effect. At the same time, reaction products are produced that contribute to the formation of extremely adhesive tribo polymers with excellent sliding properties.
These form an additional extremely pressure-resistant protective layer.

During the smoothing effect the metal surfaces are levelled, which result in a considerable decrease in the coefficient of friction. The additive consumption is extremely low during these processes.

Castrol Tribol GR 100 – PD Grease Series (Formerly Longtime PD 2 Grease)

Application

Designed for long-term/life-time lubrication, even under the most difficult operating conditions, of highly loaded rolling and sliding bearings. Also suitable for spreader rolls, steel mill roll neck bearing and for bearings with changing rotational directions or slewing movements Can be used as a semi-fluid grease lubricant in gears such as flange, drum-type and worm gears.

Tribol GR 100-0 PD and 100-00 PD are highly recommended for anti-friction bearings with grease reservoir and for leaky gearboxes.

Application

Developed for lubrication of anti-friction and plain bearings requiring a high oil viscosity and operating in wet and dusty atmospheres found in applications such as:

High Temperature Grease

Our high-temperature range of greases have been designed for the most severe conditions. Application

High-temperature grease for rolling and sliding bearings. For applications such as heated bearings of dry calenders and dry cylinders, fan bearings, conveyor systems in paint lines, autoclaves, baking ovens and continuous-flow drying ovens.

Application

High-performance grease designed for use in heavy-duty industrial applications at elevated temperatures. Castrol Molub Alloy 2115-2

Application

Very high temperature synthetic bearing grease – Primarily developed for extended service in oven conveyor bearings, paint drying ovens, textile stentering frames, and similar applications where minimum reapplication and drip free performance is required. May be used in continuous service at 250°C/482°F and be exposed intermittently to temperatures up to 280°C/536°F. When using above 200°C, forced draft ventilation should be used – see TOXICITY on reverse side.

Open Gear

Castrol’s open gear greases can be divided into two main types:

Semi-dry working film (Metallic Soap): The primary function of this type of lubricant is to act as a friction reducing interface between the meshing surfaces and to cushion against shock loads. These uniquely compounded lubricants give maximum protection to the gears and flow readily in the film forming process, yet resist ‘squeeze out’ and cling tenaciously to gear teeth. The semi-dry working film allows these lubricants to be used in low-to-moderately dusty, dirty applications, without forming abrasive compounds.

Semi-fluid gel (Non-soap): Our unique semi-fluid gel (thixotropic) greases are formulated with a non-soap, inorganic thickening system. This technology (unique to Castrol) exhibits a stable form at rest. It will, however, still spread easily and evenly since the gel-like grease ‘liquifies’ when pressure is applied, carrying away both heat and contaminants. It will also resist fling-off.

Application

Suitable for use on all types of open gears, rails and rollers, racks and pinions, dipper sticks and other slides on shovels and draglines.

It is certified to Bucyrus International SD 4713 specification (CAT) and Komatsu Specification for open gear lubricants.

Castrol Molub Alloy 8031 Series

Application

Recommended for use in open gear applications in cement, mining and any other industries requiring anti-scuff and anti-wear protection and where no product build-up is desired. For open gears, screw-type actuators and low-to-moderate velocity bushings and bearings equipped with centralized or sump-type lubrication systems.

1. Thixotropic nature – exhibits a stable form at rest but becomes fluid when agitated so drains easily from surrounding guards.

2. Superior anti-scuff and anti-wear protection where no product build-up is desired.

Castrol Molub Alloy 243 Arctic

Application

For Extreme Low Temperature, For use in plain and anti-friction bearings operating in freezing environments down to -65°F (-54°C). It is designed to meet the performance requirements of MIL-G-10924C Specification. For effective lubrication in very cold temperatures, it remain soft and pliable, especially in rolling element bearings.

Application

Synthetic lithium grease is especially designed for low temperatures and bearings running at high speeds at room temperatures. Also compatible with elastomers based on synthetic materials (i.e. NBR, CR or on natural rubber).
